Since buying my staffing company over 8 years ago, I have had a unique vantage point to observe our fractured job market. I have had individuals turn down assignments because of what they were getting in Gov’t benefits, I have had the Department of Economic Security grant benefits to folks that clearly do not deserve them, and I have posted jobs that people simply do not make the effort to apply. It is not a popular opinion but we must phase these benefits out and soon. Our already horrible budget deficits and entitlement programs are sinking our national boat. This cannot continue or there will be some horrible consequences down the road. Unfortunately, you will never hear this tough medicine from anyone in Washington or the current crop of candidates. The gravy train is coming to an end and our children will be paying the bill.
Time to start eliminating long-term unemployment benefits

Long-term unemployment benefits are merely a disguised form of welfare. Unemployment benefits were designed to provide a short-term crutch to help people stay afloat between jobs that they lost through no fault of their own. By now offering up to 99 weeks of benefits, unemployment “insurance” has become an alternate form of income. I agree with you that many people elect to stay in the program rather than take jobs they’d rather not work at. My own job at present is one that I’d rather not have, but hey, it’s all I can find that is even remotely related to my former field. So… I do it.
You are right on the money. They call it work for a reason…not fun.
On the nose again Mike. We cannot as a country continue to reward failure. If the money is going to be spent then it should be an incentive program. 52 weeks paid weekly until a job is found then the remainder in one lump sum tax exempt. That would give start up cash if needed for clothes, car, tools, etc. This could even be used as incentive to start a company with rewards after a new start-up hires someone on unemployment. Everyone needs help sometime but unemployment should not be a career choice. Meanwhile the employer pays for people NOT to work so that they cannot hire someone full time. Hunger is a powerful motivation to get a job, No Work – No Eat.
